Nations Petroleum's ongoing thermal development program at Lost Hills in the San Joaquin Valley is the largest new project of its type in California.
Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies Supplies 15 WAC Softeners to Nations' Lost Hills Project
WAC hardness reduction makes produced water suitable for steam generation
The steam recovery program is being implemented to fully maximize the long-lived shallow heavy oil reservoirs utilizing state-of-the-art thermal management technology to recover oil in place. Nations is currently in the construction phase of a full field steam and facility development project.
Meeting a very tight, 30-week delivery date, Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies has supplied the Lost Hills project with 15 weak acid cation (WAC) softeners with regeneration equipment for treating produced water.
The 15 softener columns are divided into three groups of five parallel units each. The first two (primary WAC softeners) are in parallel, and the last group (polishing WAC softeners) is in series with the previous groups. Hardness reduction makes this water suitable for steam generation in the project's steam flood application. The combined system is designed to produce effluent with less than 0.2 ppm in hardness. Total flow rate is 4,848 gallons per minute.
For produced water softening, VWS manufactures weak acid cation (WAC) primary and polishing softeners and strong acid cation (SAC) series softeners for hardness reduction.
