Whiting Clean Energy/BP Whiting Refinery, Indiana, USA

The Client

The Whiting Refinery is located on 1,400 acres and operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with about 1,700 BP employees and between 500 to 1,500 contract workers each day.

The refinery makes about 16 million gallons of product daily - about half of it is gasoline. Other fuels produced at the facility include diesel, aviation fuel and propane.

Project Description

Whiting Clean Energy (WCE) has entered into an agreement with N.A. Water Systems to provide engineering design, equipment and material procurement, and construction services (EPC) to install
a demineralized water treatment system.

The treatment system will use hot lime softened water provided by WCE as the influent water source for the system.

Solutions & Technologies

  • Plate and frame heat exchangers
  • Air-cooled heat exchangers
  • Carbon filters
  • Demineralizing vessels: packed bed cation unit, layered bed anion unit, cation polisher
  • The regeneration system: bulk chemical storage tanks and waste neutralization system
  • Effluent from the demineralizer trains flows through the plate and frame heat exchangers that transfer the thermal energy from the influent feed to the effluent before it is collected in two DI storage tanks. Four DI product pumps transfer the hot DI water to Whiting's cogeneration facility.
