The Client

  • West Basin Municipal Water District, (WBMWD) in Southern Los Angeles serves a population of 900,000.
  • The district area includes: Los Angeles airport and several refineries - BP(formerly Chevron) , Exxon (formerly Mobil) , Arco.
  • WBMWD: first agencies implementing a waste water reclamation system.

Project Description

  • WBMWD needs to form a barrier from seawater intrusion and provide drought proof supply for industry (specially refineries).
  • D&B contract awarded to USF to treat secondary sewage to provide cooling water and boiler feed to the 3 local refineries.

  • Process design, engineering, equipment supply,supervision & commissioning

  • Continuous Micro Filtration (CMF)
  • Reverse Osmosis (RO)

Technical Data

Four contracts placed treating 67,000m3/d:

  • Aquifer 10,500 m3/d - 1997
  • Mobil refinery 12,500 m3/d - 1998
  • Arco refinery 22,400 m3/d - 1999
  • Chevron refinery 16,000 m3/d - 2001

WBMWD expects to continue expanding its reclamation system and has ultimate target of 378, 000m3/d reclamation capacity and 179,000m3/d RO water capacity by 2020.
