In an offshore environment, water injection is normally applied to maintain reservoir pressure for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR). Produced water is commonly disposed of by injection or overboard into the sea.
In cases of injection using sea water, the injection water has to be treated to ensure that scaling of plant and plugging of the reservoir do not occur. In addition, oxygen must be prevented from entering the reservoir as'souring' can occur which creates corrosion of plant and reduces the value of the produced hydrocarbons. Overboard produced water disposal entails treatment to a high standard for environmental reasons.
