Transportable Treatment Units for Marcellus Shale Gas Produced Water Now Offered by Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies

Transportable Water Treatment

Transportable Treatment System using MULTIFLO™ Softening Technology

Pittsburgh, PA, June 18, 2010

Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies announced the development of a transportable water treatment system proven effective for treating Produced Water generated from gas exploration activities at Marcellus Shale drilling sites.

This application of the company's proprietary MULTIFLO™ Softening technology removes the scale-forming constituents in the water to the extent necessary for reuse in gas exploration fracing operations. The modular design of the portable unit will enable drilling companies to move it from site to site throughout the gas fields. The system is designed to treat up to 10,000 barrels per day of Produced Water.

MULTIFLO™ is a proven technology for water softening, packaged into a portable design to meet the needs of this burgeoning industry. A portable unit will be delivered in November to begin treatment of Produced Water for reuse as frac water in the Marcellus Shale gas formation in Pennsylvania.

"We have long been aware of the need for a transportable treatment system for this industry," said Lnsp "Naggs" Nagghappan, who developed the concept for the new application. "An understanding of the water quality requirements for reuse in the fracing operations was key to identifying a process that would achieve the necessary water quality within a small footprint and that could be transported."

"The transportable system is much more cost-effective and environmentally friendly than trucking water to a centralized facility for treatment," explained Nagghappan. "We are not only saving transportation costs, but also eliminating the carbon emissions associated with hauling water for treatment, thus reducing the carbon footprint of the process."
